How it all started…
I’ve been using Poshmark for almost a year now. I had heard a couple of friends mention that they used the Poshmark app here and there, but we never talked much about it and I didn’t have a good sense of what it actually was. What first really sparked my interest was a banner ad I ran across when browsing online one day that said “Get started selling in 30 seconds!” 30 seconds? I was incredulous. I decided to download it just for the satisfaction of proving this ad wrong. But when I opened the app and started following the tutorial tips, it was SO EASY. All I had to do was snap a picture of my item with my phone, write a short description, price it, and BOOM – it was up for sale. It really was that easy.
A few hours after posting my first item, I was surprised – and excited! to see that I got an offer from a buyer. The item was a pair of Lilly Pulitzer shorts, which I now know is one of the most popular brands in the app, and it was the middle of summer, so given that combination of factors, it’s really not that surprising. But as a brand new seller with no experience and low expectations, I was so excited to think that someone wanted to pay me for a pair of old shorts I didn’t want anymore! Within minutes, I accepted an offer and I had my first sale on my hands. And the rest, as they say, is history!
Now, 10 months and over 200 sales later, I want to share with you some of the reasons I love using Poshmark so much! Here are the top 5 reasons I think you’ll enjoy using the app. With Poshmark, you can:
Declutter your closet while making someone else’s day!
Really, does this one need any explanation? I think we’re all finally coming around to the idea that more stuff does NOT equal more happiness. In fact, research indicates the opposite. Once our basic needs are met, piling up an abundance of extra stuff doesn’t make us happier – it actually drains us and stresses us out. Selling on Poshmark is a great way to detox your closet from clutter overload, while simultaneously making someone else happy with a piece of clothing they’ll love! Even if you’re not a person which much clutter in your closet, selling and purchasing on Poshmark is also a much more efficient way of changing up your style by phasing out older pieces that don’t work for you anymore and selectively replacing them with ones that do! Speaking of which…
Find amazing deals – and become a more selective shopper.
OK, I realize it sounds a little contradictory to preach about decluttering in one point and then turn around rave about the great deals you can get buying clothes on Poshmark in the next – but hear me out! I sold on Poshmark for 2 months before I ever bought anything. And when I did finally purchase something, I had thought about it long and hard, thanks to the handy “Likes” feature in the app. Any time you see an item you may potentially want to buy, you can simply “Like” it, and it’s saved for you to think about and go back to. I’ve literally had an item in my Likes for months before making an offer on it, and this has helped me avoid impulse buying and ensure that I really love the items I end up getting. I’ve only purchased a handful of things since joining, but almost all of them are staples that I wear constantly – like my favorite Express Stella Skinny jeans and my adorable Kate Spade Astor Court Naomi cross body – scored for $16 and $45 respectively!
Disrupt the fast fashion industry by buying and selling secondhand.
I’m no expert on this, but I have been trying to make a conscious effort over the past year to educate myself more on the social and environmental impacts of the things I buy – and the fashion industry is one with huge social and environmental impacts. It may come as a surprise to some to learn that the fashion industry is one of the biggest sources of pollution in the world (though exactly how big is up in the air, according to this article), and that many garment workers around the world suffer from unsafe working conditions and unreasonable demands from the companies that employ them. By selling your gently used clothes on Poshmark, you’re helping the environment by ensuring they don’t end up in a landfill or incinerator. And any time you purchase used clothing on Poshmark, you’re diverting dollars away from the fast fashion industry and voting with your dollars for a more sustainable culture of fashion. If you want to learn more about how the fashion industry impacts the environment and workers around the world, I highly recommend checking out the documentary The True Cost, available on Netflix.
Earn some extra income – or earn money to shop “for free!”
My Poshmark earnings have been such a blessing to our family. I joined Poshmark at a pivotal time in my life, when I had just left a difficult job to take some time off and regroup, knowing it would mean I wasn’t going to be contributing a steady income to our finances for a while. Through Poshmark, I was able to contribute significantly to our bottom line in the second half of 2016, even when I wasn’t working a steady job. It’s certainly not an overnight process – it takes consistent effort and learning, but you can make a nice side income using Poshmark if you work at it. There are even sellers who do it as their full-time job, with the full-time income to match!
On the flip side, there are also sellers who sell their old items exclusively so they can buy new ones. Once you sell on Poshmark, the earnings get deposited into your PM account once your buyer has received and accepted their package. You can choose to cash out your earnings in the form of a direct deposit or check, or simply keep them in your PM account and use them to purchase clothes and accessories in the app, without ever having to use money from your actual bank account!
Make new friends!
One of the most fun parts of Poshmark is connecting with new friends, both in person and over the app. Poshmark frequently encourages poshers in various cities to find each other and connect for a party! This photo was taken at one of these events here in the Triangle a few months ago. It was so much fun to meet all these ladies and chat over our mutual love for all things Posh!
So, are you convinced? Download the app and give Poshmark a try today!
